Your Diet During Pregnancy

The best gift a mother can give to her baby is a good start in life. It is essential for an expectant mother to eat well balanced meals comprising of food from all foods groups.

Good nutrition is vital for a healthy pregnancy. Eating the right food can ultimately affect your health and the health of your baby.

But how can you sure you're eating the right foods? Choosing widely from the foods listed under each of the following food groups will ensure your diet remains well balanced throughout your pregnancy.

RICE AND RICE ALTERNATIVE 

Foods from this group includes rice, pasta, noodles, cereals, bread and other starchy foods. They are good sources of energy, so a large proportion of your diet should comprise food from this group.

 As well as energy they provide you with vitamins, minerals, fiber and a little protein. Try to include a whole grain bread or brown rice products in your diet.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Fresh fruit and vegetables are excellent sources of many essential vitamins and minerals, as well as providing fiber for roughage.In particular, fruit and vegetables contain carotene's ( which are used from vitamin A ), the B vitamins, vitamin C and vitamin E. They also contain minerals which include potassium, calcium, iron and magnesium, among others.

To get the most nutritional value from vegetables, eat a wide variety. Include green leafy vegetables, such as camote tops, saluyot and malunggay as they tend to be higher in certain nutrients in comparison with other types of vegetables. Avoid overcooking vegetables as this destroys the vitamins.

Fruit, particularly citrus fruits like oranges, are a good source of vitamin C which help iron absorption. Eating fresh fruit with its edible skin will also provide you with fiber.
